Slings

Slings are the most important part of any hoisting procedure. It is the sling which is in contact with the patients body and even if you have the most expensive and up-to-date hoist, the wrong sling can make the lift uncomfortable or even dangerous.

It is very important to assess each individual to ensure that no only is the correct type of sling used but also the correct size. It is strongly recommended that each person that requires hoisting has at least two slings for their own use. This ensures that a spare sling is present should one be damaged or in the laundry.

Slings are examined for defects at each 6-monthly L.O.L.E.R. inspection but it is the responsibility of individual carers to ensure that a sling is safe to use before each lift is carried out. If a sling has damage to the straps or material, it must not be used.
